A rain warning is in place for Ha’apai island while a strong wind warning is in place for the Niuas.

The wind warning is in place for Niua Toputapu and Niua Fo’ou, according to Metservice. 

It said a tropical depression was located at about 970km northwest of Suva,Fiji or 1700km northwest of Nuku’alofa, Tonga at 8am this morning.

The system is currently moving at a speed of 18 knots (36km/hr) in an east-southeast direction.

On its current track tropical depression 03f is expected to develop into a tropical cyclone on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, a trough of low pressure lies slow moving over Tonga.

Associated clouds with occasional showers may still affect the group.

A damaging gale force winds of 60-70km per hour with momentary gusts up to 90km per hours is expected for the Niuas by tomorrow afternoon. Mostly cloudy with occasional showers possibly heavy at times with isolated thunderstorms.

Vava’u and Ha’apai are expecting light variable winds, becoming fresh to strong east to northeast winds by tonight. Mostly cloudy with occasional showers, possibly heavy at times with isolated thunderstorms.
