Relive 1News’ live updates of this morning’s Test match between the All Blacks and Springboks at Twickenham Stadium in London, England.

FT: NZL 7-35 RSA

And a knock on ends it.

Dominance from South Africa and a wake up call for the All Blacks about how hard they’ll have to work when things don’t go their way. It’s a record loss for the All Blacks against their old foes – their worst margin previously was a 17-0 loss in 1928! Had it not been for Roigard’s breakaway, it could have been another goose egg on the board but that’s the least of the ABs worries now.

The discipline was poor, so too were the lineouts and kicking game and they were made to pay over and over again. Foster has two weeks to iron things out – and also deal with the other issues that spawned from this game in Lomax’s injury and Barrett’s cards.

Still, that’s all for us from our live updates. Stick around on the site for a match report and coverage from the team this morning and a recap of everything later tonight at 6pm on the telly.

Have a good weekend!

79min: NZL 7-35 RSA

One last chance here as the Boks are penalised inside their 22 and Savea takes it quickly!

77min: NZL 7-35 RSA

All Blacks lose the ball and the Springboks come storming back all the way down to the NZ 22 before losing it themselves! Roigard with another break and he kicks ahead for the Barrett brothers to chase! Jordie gets there but the bounce is horrid and his kick ahead goes dead. Springboks scrum 15m from their line.

74min: NZL 7-35 RSA

It’s all getting a bit fast and loose here! Boks cough up the ball and the All Blacks are looking for a counterattack but get a penalty instead. Jordie Barrett kicks for touch and it’s an NZ lineout 20m from Boks’ line.

72min: NZL 7-35 RSA

NZL TRY! The All Blacks are on the board with some Roigard magic! After losing the ball and the Boks manage to get 10m inside the NZ half, a counterruck gets the ABs back on attack and it’s Roigard with the quick pick and go! He steps inside one, fends off another, fends off the last defender and runs in a try from 60m out! SUPERB effort and while it won’t change the result of this one, it does instill some pride back in this side on a testing day.

69min: NZL 0-35 RSA

All Blacks get a rare chance here with the Boks losing the ball shortly after the restart. Their scrum is 10m inside the Boks half.

68min: NZL 0-35 RSA

RSA TRY! …and the Springboks score from it. Bit of action off the lineout and Smith goes over to score.

66min: NZL 0-28 RSA

And now another penalty at the scrum for the Boks! South Africa use it to find touch again and it’s another 5m lineout…

65min: NZL 0-28 RSA

Painful play here. All Blacks win their own scrum and after a great break from Telea, it all goes to waste with another handling error. Springboks scrum on halfway.

63min: NZL 0-28 RSA

Some more changes now for the All Blacks as Papali’i replaces Cane and Roigard takes over from Smith. Not sure if it’s strategic or Foster simply protecting his players with this one seemingly wrapped up.

Action on the field has the Boks with a scrum 10m inside the NZ half.

60min: NZL 0-28 RSA

RSA TRY! The Boks win the lineout, the Boks set the maul, the Boks score the try. Simple rugby executed to perfection.

58min: NZL 0-21 RSA

Nothing is going right today! The All Blacks win the scrum and go to the right wing to settle. Coming back, there’s another knock on and as they try to recover it, they give up a penalty instead. Boks use it to get themselves a 5m lineout near the NZ line.

56min: NZL 0-21 RSA

Springboks looking to keep the All Blacks pinned down but de Klerk’s kick is overcooked and rolls dead so we get an All Blacks scrum near halfway.

53min: NZL 0-21 RSA

All Blacks win their lineout but heading to the midfield and looking for the offload, there’s another knock on! Boks scrum just inside their 22.

52min: NZL 0-21 RSA

RSA YELLOW! All Blacks back on attack! Boks’ throw at their lineout isn’t straight, giving the All Blacks the ball and soon after they cough up a penalty. The TMO comes in to show possible foul play and it has du Toit’s arm making contact with Cane’s head. It meets the yellow card threshold and he’s off with a referral to the bunker. All Blacks use the penalty to get a lineout just inside the Boks’ 22.

50min: NZL 0-21 RSA

With the “Bomb Squad” fresh on the field, they earn a penalty at the scrum and Boks clear for a lineout near halfway. De Groot’s night is over with Williams on the field.

48min: NZL 0-21 RSA

All Blacks handed a scrum after their lineout and despite being down a man, they win it. Ball comes left and is settled in the midfield only for it to come back to the right with Jordan set up for a challenging finish in the corner. He doesn’t back himself and tries to fling it back infield but it’s rightly ruled a forward pass. Boks scrum on their own 5m.

46min: NZL 0-21 RSA

RSA TRY! Some relief for the All Blacks! After Moodie appeared to waltz his way in to score for the Boks, replays show the start of his impressive run was from an offside position at a ruck so instead it’s a penalty for the All Blacks. They could’ve very easily been down 28 here but instead it’s an All Blacks lineout 10m from the Boks line!

42min: NZL 0-21 RSA

RSA TRY! No sooner had we finished those updates the Boks are in! Barrett’s clearance was a horror show off the side of the boot following the kick off and that gave the Boks a lineout 10m from the NZ line. A slick move sees Marx go over in the right corner.

40min: NZL 0-14 RSA

Boks get us going again but a couple of quick updates for you!

Barrett’s second yellow card for head contact has not been upgraded so if there is any judicial work to do after this, that could be a positive sign.

Lomax’s knee injury appears to have been a gash above the knee and not something structural to do with ligaments. We will have to see what that means later.

Changes already for the ABs at the break – Taukei’aho in for Coles and we should have noted that Jacobson had his night ended early when Barrett was red carded with Tupou Vaa’i replacing him.

And with the All Blacks coughing up the ball at their own lineout again, that takes us to halftime.

Well, what a difference a few weeks can make! The Boks have come out with the heat in this contest and the All Blacks aren’t coping well! Discipline is obviously the biggest issue with two yellow cards and a red card in the first 40 minutes.

Their ball handling is another area of serious concern – they haven’t had many chances on attack but twice have given up two easy intercepts and the lineout has been far from the standard Jason Ryan has established in this pack.

Finally, their kicking game has been no where near the quality they’ve had this season – many haven’t been contestable and the Boks have made them pay on the counter.

Credit where it’s due though – South Africa have got the momentum, used it to play in the right area of the field and have rarely given the All Blacks reprieve to get back in this contest. The only problem is the All Blacks seem to be helping them with that at times!

Stay with us, we’ll have the second half shortly.

40+4min: NZL 0-14 RSA

NZL NO TRY! Scratch that! The TMO has come in to show there was a small knock on amid all the action and flair from the All Blacks in the build up so the five points are taken away. The All Blacks did have a penalty advantage though so they get to go to a 5m lineout before the half.

40+2min: NZL 5-14 RSA

NZL TRY! It’s taken them 40 minutes, two yellow cards and even a red card, but finally the All Blacks show some life! They get a penalty advantage around 30m out and that gives them warrant to play with some flair – and boy do they do that! Offloads left and right, keeping the play going and finally they’ve managed to get a numbers advantage on the left wing for Jordan to go in and score.

39min: NZL 0-14 RSA

NZL RED! Well this has gone from bad to worse! Scott Barrett’s night is over! Marx has complained after the penalty of a high shot and the TMO has come in to show it. Replays show Marx on the ground at a ruck and Barrett’s attempted cleanout is low and he’s get it wrong badly. Head contact and we all know what that means. Referee says it’s a yellow card infringement which he will refer to the bunker for whether it needs upgrading or not, but with it being Barrett’s second yellow card this match, he’s got a red card instead.

Put simply? Not great.

38min: NZL 0-14 RSA

The All Blacks win a penalty shortly after the restart to get a lineout on the Boks 22! It’s sloppy as Coles overthrows but recovered in the midfield and so their first real attack in this game is on! Bit of ball movement left and right but not much headway as the Boks’ line holds firm. But the metres are coming slow and steady before the Boks crack and are penalised! Killing the ball at the ruck. What will Cane call for here?

35min: NZL 0-14 RSA

RSA TRY! On a silver platter! The All Blacks win their lineout but the attempted maul is going backwards. That bad platform forces the All Blacks to go to their backline on the back foot and despite looking like they may have made it work with some forward ball in the midfield, an attempted offload lands in the lap of Arendse and he races away practically untouched to score under the sticks.

33min: NZL 0-7 RSA

And now the All Blacks get the scrum penalty! Newell wins it for them and the All Blacks happily clear for a lineout on their 22.

32min: NZL 0-7 RSA

THE ALL BLACKS SURVIVE – AGAIN! Boks steal the lineout and with no NZ defence settled, they shift it down the line looking to finish in the left corner. The Kiwi line gets across though and causes enough pressure to force a knock-on going for the line! All Blacks scrum on their own 5m.

30min: NZL 0-7 RSA

All Blacks win their lineout and clear but de Klerk comes right back with a superb kick that bounces into touch and keeps the ABs inside their 22 – a lineout 15m from their own line.

29min: NZL 0-7 RSA

All Blacks lose their lineout and South Africa settle before eventually de Klerk goes high to clear. All Blacks win the aerial battle and look to move it down the line but Moodie gets the intercept and kicks ahead! He’s overcooked that kick though in the excitement and it bounces into touch. All Blacks with another lineout but this one is on their 22 instead.

Short stoppage in play as de Groot is now attended to by medical staff. He eventually gets to his feet to carry on but not before his right knee is heavily-strapped.

26min: NZL 0-7 RSA

Cane rejoins the action and we’re back up to a full 15v15 and the All Blacks have a penalty to get them going! They find touch and will have a lineout on the Boks’ 22 – their first real trip into the deeper parts of the South African half!

24min: NZL 0-7 RSA

Springboks win their lineout and move it to the midfield where Esterhuizen bursts through the line into the backfield! Mo’unga is the only one who can stop and does so in the one-on-one. Springboks look to move it right with a kick-pass but it’s denied by Telea, only for the Kiwi wing to be taken into touch. Boks lineout on the NZ 22 as Scott Barrett rejoins the action.

22min: NZL 0-7 RSA

And sure enough, a penalty at the scrum. Boks clear and are up to halfway for a lineout.

21min: NZL 0-7 RSA

NZL NO THREE! All Blacks have a chance to respond immediately with a penalty on the Boks’ 22 but from right in front, Mo’unga hits the post! How has he missed that?! No one seemed to think he would and in the chaos, the referee has rewarded South Africa a scrum – not ideal for the ABs with their pack down by two!

19min: NZL 0-7 RSA

RSA TRY! After the All Blacks give up ANOTHER penalty the Boks are back on the NZ five-metre line. They go to the maul and somehow are stopped short again. The ball goes left, a couple of hit-ups and Kolisi finally goes over the line. It took them almost 20 minutes but the Springboks are finally rewarded on the scoreboard for all this pressure – and still have a decent amount of time to add to it with two in the bin!

16min: NZL 0-0 RSA

RSA NO TRY! THE ALL BLACKS HAVE SURVIVED AGAIN! The maul is set and rather than go for the line with the superior numbers advantage in their pack, they break and go left for the line and Mo’unga gets in underneath it! They go upstairs to check the grounding but that just confirms the first-five’s class. Goal line dropout for NZ.

15min: NZL 0-0 RSA

NZL YELLOW! The All Blacks are down to 13! Cane now heads to the bin as he’s penalised for side entry to the Boks’ maul off their lineout! MASSIVE amounts of pressure being put on here and the NZ discipline isn’t up to the task at the moment. They haven’t given up a point yet but at some point, this trade isn’t going to pan out!

14min: NZL 0-0 RSA

NZL YELLOW! Scott Barrett is the eventual casualty for the All Blacks’ poor discipline! He came through at a ruck but did so incorrectly and the referee has had enough. Boks kick for touch again and get a lineout 10m from the NZ line.

Perhaps of more concern though, Lomax is down and holding his knee and he has not moved an inch. Newell is on the field already to replace him and if Lomax’s face is anything to go by, this is not looking good. He’s helped to his feet but his night is over as he’s carted off the field to applause. We can only hope it isn’t as bad as it looks.

13min: NZL 0-0 RSA

THE ALL BLACKS SURVIVE AGAIN! The scrum is settled and the Boks shift it right. Two hit ups and De Klerk looks to recycle quickly but with the now-wet ball, takes his eye off it for a second and loses it at the base of the ruck! All Blacks scrum on their 5m line again. They win their scrum and Mo’unga clears for a South Africa lineout just outside the NZ 22.

10min: NZL 0-0 RSA

As the rain starts to fall at Twickenham, it’s ANOTHER penalty for the Boks! This one is at the scrum with Lomax penalised this time. Ref has said the next penalty down here will be a yellow card.

9min: NZL 0-0 RSA

All Blacks go high on their eventual clearance but the Springboks claim it and are 10m inside the NZ half. The All Blacks aren’t settled and the Boks grubber one through in behind! The chase is on by Mo’unga gets back and manages to keep out of his in-goal. Smith looks for a forwards unit to settle for a clearance but there’s a knock-on from Cane trying to do that! Springboks scrum 5m from the NZ line!

6min: NZL 0-0 RSA

AND THEY DO! No contest in the air, the defence is timed right this time as the Boks go for the maul! It goes away to the left but NZ still hold on and in the chaos, the maul hits the deck. It’s a pile of bodies and in the end the ref doesn’t see the ball coming out so it’s a Kiwi scrum. As the bodies get up it’s Scott Barrett who has got himself in there.

5min: NZL 0-0 RSA

ANOTHER lineout penalty. Referee gives his final warning and Cane has again sought clarification with the Boks going right back to the lineout. No second chances now.

3min: NZL 0-0 RSA

Another lineout penalty as the All Blacks are setting their maul defence too early! Cane has gone to the ref to clarify the timing as the Springboks have gone for a third lineout. They need to get this one right.

2min: NZL 0-0 RSA

First blood to the Boks! A scrum penalty as De Groot falters and that gives the South Africans terrific territory – a lineout 10m from the NZ line. They earn another penalty at said lineout and so they go back there for another one, this time just 5m out.

1min: NZL 0-0 RSA

Barrett goes deep on the kick and Boks settle inside their 22. De Klerk goes high to clear but All Blacks claim it and settle on halfway before being rewarded a scrum.

0min: NZL 0-0 RSA

Barrett gets us going and we’re underway at Twickenham!

6:30am: Kickoff

Up now is the haka and as the assemble in that now-iconic arrowhead formation, the “All Blacks” chants pick up! Smith leads the challenge as South Africa’s fans respond in song but you’re not drowning out Kapa o Pango. It’s a fierce challenge and the Boks look up for the challenge!

We’re moments away now!

6:25am: Anthems

The teams are on the field and are welcomed by big cheers. It’s difficult to give a crowd split for this one but make no doubt, there is plenty of pride in both of anthems. Credit it where it’s due though, Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika sounded a wee bit louder!

6:20am: Conditions

A whopping 82,000 packing themselves into the Home of England Rugby to watch New Zealand and South Africa – how good?! They’ve got a fair evening forecast to work with – cloudy and around 18 degrees with little wind to worry about. Good conditions for an epic encounter.

Believe it or not, this isn’t the first time the two great rugby nations have squared off at Twickenham. It also hosted them in 2015 for their Rugby World Cup semi-final clash which the All Blacks came out on top in 20-18. Can we expect another nail-biter?

6:10am: Focused

It’s been a lively build-up to today’s Test with “Hansengate”, the Owen Farrell saga and more but the All Blacks have blocked out all that noise to focus on this match. Here’s some of the reports, interviews and analysis from our 1News team looking at this epic contest and the World Cup:

The World Cup may be just around the corner but All Blacks captain Sam Cane has quashed any talk of it in London, with tomorrow’s Test at Twickenham against the Springboks the sole focus of this week.

Tomorrow’s match has plenty of anticipation around it, with it being the All Blacks’ final match before their World Cup campaign in France next month.

But it’s a new experience on multiple fronts for Cane and his side, who in the past have usually played their final hit-out before a World Cup on home soil and against far less challenging opposition.

“It’s another opportunity to put on the black jersey and it’s going to be a pretty special and unique occasion, playing the Springboks at a sold out Twickenham,” he said.

“In the past we’ve had Tests at home, I think we played Tonga before we headed off to the last World Cup, so as a group we’re pretty excited about this challenge in particular and the fact it’s only two weeks away from our opening game at the World Cup, it’s good timing.”

Cane said it was difficult to compare final preparations from this year to 2019 where the team finished third in Japan.

“In 2019, because we had our last Test match in New Zealand, there was that excitement about going to the World Cup but here and now, I can truthfully say all the focus has been here on this week and then some more excitement will build and it will hit home that we’re heading to a World Cup when we get to France,” he said.

“But right now, it’s been good that we’re in a different country preparing for a different challenge.”

Coach Ian Foster has named a near full-strength side for the contest despite the physicality the Springboks are bound to bring, but Cane said the thought of injuries was just as distant from their minds as the World Cup.

“No thought or talk of holding anything back,” he said.

“If you go into games with that mentality, when the margins are so small — five per cent can mean the difference between a win and a loss — there’s no point.

“You have to go in all guns blazing and give it everything.”

There are a few notable names missing – Brodie Retallick and Shannon Frizell are the most obvious with injuries – but Foster has also named Dane Coles to start at hooker with Samisoni Taukei’aho providing bench cover, leaving no room for Codie Taylor.

But other than Taylor and the injured duo, Foster appears to have his combinations in place.

“My heart is not in my mouth. It’s a Test match,” Foster reiterated this morning in London after injury concerns were raised again.

“Some things are part of the game. If you go in half-hearted and worrying about the consequences those things are almost guaranteed to happen. The same thing is going to happen in the World Cup. You don’t want injuries in any game.

“This is ideal for us. It’s the sort of build up we need to make sure we keep climbing our performance levels.

“The only way to go into this is full throttle.”
