- Police are appealing for information on the whereabouts of 20-year-old Vini Steven Mahoni in relation to the alleged murder of a Head Hunters gang member last year.
Mahoni has warrants for his arrest, including a murder charge that has recently been filed.
Police said in the past week it has obtained a warrant in lieu of summons relating to the alleged murder of Charles Pongi in Auckland’s Pt England on August 5, 2023.
Pongi, aged 32, was fatally shot in Taurima Reserve. He died in Auckland Hospital after admitting himself with gunshot wounds. A homicide investigation was launched shortly after.
Last year, four men entered not guilty pleas in relation to Pongi’s death. All four were remanded in custody, and all four were given interim name suppression.
Pongi’s funeral also saw a number of arrests made and vehicles seized. 1News reported at the time the trial is set for 2025.
Mahoni, of Papakura, also has warrants for his arrest for failing to appear in court on charges of possessing an offensive weapon and possession of cannabis.
“Police have been undertaking several inquiries to locate Mahoni and at this point we believe he is evading authorities,” Detective Senior Sergeant Armstrong said.
“We would like to hear from anyone who has information on his whereabouts.
“If you see Mahoni, do not approach him and instead contact 111.”
