A bus which rolled between Rotorua and Taupō this morning, injuring at least 12, was carrying Tongan seasonal workers who had only just arrived in New Zealand.
St John responded to the crash with four ambulances, two helicopters and a rapid response unit. It also sent a manager, four clinical support units, and a major incident support team.
A spokesperson confirmed the statuses of 12 patients who had been taken to various hospitals, while saying 19 of the 31 people checked were uninjured

The crash occurred on Broadlands Rd at around 7.30am, police confirmed.
“Five patients in a minor condition were transported to Taupō Hospital. Three patients in a moderate condition, one patient in a minor condition, and one patient in a serious condition were transported to Rotorua Hospital.
“One patient in a moderate condition and one patient in a serious condition were airlifted to Waikato Hospital.”
Immigration NZ national manager Pacific Mike Sorensen confirmed this afternoon that the accident involved a bus carrying 30 Tongan workers travelling to the Hawke’s Bay to start work with their employer Mr Apple.
They had flown into the country early today.
“Our thoughts and best wishes go out to the individuals and families affected by this accident,” he said.
“Immigration New Zealand’s RSE Engagement Partner is working closely with Mr Apple and Tongan authorities to provide assistance and support.”
Recovery work continued at the scene this afternoon with a tow-truck on site to put the bus back onto its wheels after it rolled.
Police earlier said the crash occurred on Broadlands Rd at around 7.30am.
A spokesperson added this afternoon: “The serious crash unit has completed a scene examination and the road has since reopened.” It may take months for the cause of the crash to be established.
