A man in his 60s has died in hospital after allegedly being assaulted at a bus stop in Papatoetoe over the weekend.

Police were called to Great South Road around 2.15 pm on 27 April after the victim was found unconscious with a serious head injury.

He was rushed to Auckland City Hospital and placed in intensive care but tragically succumbed to his injuries last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Hayward of Counties Manukau CIB confirmed that a 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault. The accused appeared in the Manukau District Court today, with further charges possible as the investigation continues.

“Police are not treating this as a random attack,” Hayward said. “We understand the two men had prior interactions.”

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name, citing the early stage of the investigation. Support is being provided to the grieving family.

Police have limited their comments as the case is now before the courts.

More updates to follow as the investigation progresses.
